Bangkok golf courses

Bang Pu Golf & Sports

Bangpoo Golf and Sports Club is a good choice for the budget-conscious golfer looking to play a round of golf in Bangkok. Designed by Arnold Palmer, it often enjoys cool sea breezes, making the Bangpoo a great choice for hot days.

For golfers, the "king" does not refer to Elvis Presley, but Arnold Palmer, the first golf superstar, and at Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club, you can enjoy Arnold Palmer One of the Palmer designed golf courses and the only golf course for practicing golf in Asia Test Bangkok he built. Despite the proximity to the ocean you won't find too many water hazards on the course which is good news for less skilled golfers who will find this is a place where they can hit good shots and not lose too much ball court. However, when the wind picks up, the course can show its edge, so you need to stay focused, especially when it comes to choosing the right clubs. Unlike many new golf courses that appear bare and empty due to the lack of mature trees, Bangpoo Golf & Sports Club stays open long enough for the trees to mature and the beautiful flowers make this course a pleasure.

A fairly easy start with wide open fairways to target but watch out for the dark green bunkers. The third is a dogleg hole with water on one side and five bunkers protecting the raised and well-defined green. The 5th is another scenic dogleg with water on the right side, but if you play too conservatively you could end up in the fairway bunker cluster at the apex of the dogleg. Uphill course to a wide but narrow 2-tier green with bunkers front and rear. Completing a challenging par 4, you need to avoid the large fairway bunker that protects the right side, and then it goes from the medium iron to the very large green, providing birdie opportunities if your level is correct.

Another easy start on the back nine, dogleg, par 4 with a chance to score if you can avoid three green bunkers. Next is the longest par 3 on the course, usually played in prevailing winds, with three treacherous bunkers on the green. On the 12th hole, you need a good tee shot to carry the fairway bunker on the right, and you need to approach accurately to avoid the water on the right side of the green. The 13th hole is a long par 5 and if you can stay on the fairway you have a chance of reaching the green surrounded by 7 bunkers. The 17th hole was our favourite, a narrow landing near the tee with water and bunkers to the right, the green is also well protected with water to the left and OB to the right.

Some of the fairways are a little run down and could use some work, and finding them can be tricky, but the cheap green fees that have made this course so popular with locals more than make up for these niggles.
