Bangkok golf courses

Lam Luk Ka Country Club

Lam Lukka Country Club is a 36-hole course located on the outskirts of Bangkok, about 90 minutes from the city centre. The course winds through a beautiful wetland filled with mature trees, tropical plants and wildlife - a true escape from the city. There are two courses to choose from, the Championship East Course with A and B nine holes and the Resort West Course with C and D nine holes. Both are well maintained with excellent putting surfaces and a challenging array of water hazards.

The Championship East course hosted the 2002 Thailand PGA Championship and is the longer of the two courses. Overcoming the danger ahead requires straight punches, so any erratic shots are severely punished. Holes 7 and 8 are excellent par 4 holes, perhaps the best in Bangkok. It ends with a par 5 that you can finish in two, and your long hard shots are rewarded or punished depending on how well you aim. The bunker will swallow your ball and you will be trapped. What makes this course interesting, however, is that you can play this game more or less in a number of different ways, and while long drives are helpful, they're not required. The 18th hole is spectacular, with the fairway bisected by a creek and sloping green.
The Resort West course at Lam Lukka Country Club is much shorter, but most holes have water features, so the course must be carefully managed. Most holes offer a variety of options, and long hitters can use a driver, but many don't. The West Course is a favorite of Bangkok golfers and tourists who enjoy the variety of wildlife that surrounds the course.

The best hole on the front nine is a par three and the third is a great hole that ideally requires a gentle pull into the large green, making sure to avoid the large bunker to the left of the guard. The eighth hole looks fairly easy but always seems to cause problems, probably because of the puddles on the right of the guards - chipping right of the green can be very fast if you're conservative.

The back nine starts out as a tough but short par 4 that requires precision shots to avoid the water on the sides so irons might be better off but this leaves a long distance to get to a bunker up front raised greens. The 11th hole has a peninsula green, so it's important to avoid the fairway bunkers off the tee because the water is very close to the left edge of the putting face. The 13th hole is the best par 5 on the course, water runs off the left - a very tough approach with bunkers and mounds protecting the green right front, a waste and more bunkers to the left . A very difficult finishing hole, best hit with a 3-wood off the tee to stay to the left of the fairway. High handicappers must hit near the creek that cuts through the fairway, and the green slopes steeply from back to front, making it difficult to get close to the front pin.

The caddies have a good knowledge of the course, but maybe not particularly good English. At the clubhouse, you can swim in comfort before indulging in Thai food. Great views of the course from here and cheap green fees make this a very attractive option for golfers
