Khao Yai golf courses

Mountain Creek Golf Resort and Residences

Mountain Creek Golf Resort and Residences, an integrated golf resort in Khao Yai, Thailand, is impressive as the only golf course in Thailand designed by the one and only Severiano Ballesteros. This championship golf course features three 9-hole layouts, named for terrain types: Stream, Highlands, and Valleys. The Creek and Valley courses are probably the funniest combination because Highland Nine is flat despite its name. Cypher has left his mark on the course in a number of ways, but nowhere is this more evident than in the large S-shaped bunker on the par-3 hole at The Highlands.

One of the most interesting holes on the Creek Course is the second par 3 hole - a fairly short hole by modern standards, as you can tee off from a high position with views of the surrounding countryside. Trees line the sides and also partially block your view of the green, which is fronted by a huge rock-filled gully - there's not much room for error here as you're either on the green or the trees , but at least no bunkers. The 4th par 4 hole is another difficult hole requiring a long shot over a large drop to reach the fairway where a large bunker takes up the entire width of the fairway as you approach the green. Hole 7 is another par 4 that requires a solid shot and correct positioning as the walk across the stream to the raised green where trees partially block your view will leave you wondering.

On the third hole of the Valley Course, par 3, you tee off from an elevated tee, over some rocks, to a triangular green with a large bunker to the left and a tree in front of the bunker, next to the green Right. The 4th par 5 hole is arguably the most difficult hole on the course as you aim for a very narrow landing area protected by a series of bunkers on the left and trees on the right. Unless you're a long hitter, you're likely to face a blind second on the dogleg hole when the hole curves to the right. The approach leads to a tabletop green with bunkers on both sides - if you run from behind you will disappear into the deep rough. The par 3 seventh hole will create a nightmare for high handicappers. They go from elevated courses to boxing rings to island greens - the dry season isn't always surrounded by water, but the lush vegetation is just as bad. The greens are not that big and there is no relief area – basically you either put in for birdie or play from the landing!

As I mentioned, Seve made his mark on the par-3 hole, the third being a large S-shaped bunker. The target is small, with a boulder guarding the front left of the green, flanked by two bunkers. Short and right, you end up in Seves Bunker - go further and you can lock yourself to a tree behind the green. The seventh hole is another very difficult par 3 with a narrow and undulating green with a small pond and five bunkers around the green. There's also a lot of trouble on the back, so this looks like a real potential card-breaker.

The resort also has many other facilities including a five-star hotel, spa, sauna and massage rooms, and swimming pools.
