Bangkok golf courses

Muang Kaew Golf Club

Although Muang Kaew Golf Club is one of the closest golf courses to central Bangkok and the airport, numerous trees and lakes separate you from the city. One of the best maintained and fun golf courses in Bangkok, it was completely redesigned a few years ago by Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley and is now Bangkok Golf Club A football favorite.

The course is long, especially around the black tees, but makes up for it with acceptable fairways, and unless you're prone to big hockey or big curves, you should be able to get to the putting face successfully. Approaching the green presents a number of challenges, as the green is protected by well-placed and sometimes high bunkers and cuts tight around the putting surface.

Some of the par 4s are so similar you might not remember them after a round, but there are some challenging par 3s and long, challenging par 5s through numerous water hazards that are either Protect the green, or wait above the green, and this unpredictable discount will be more difficult.

The second hole is a difficult par 4 with bunkers protecting the right side of the fairway and a water hazard entering the fairway about 100 yards from the green, which is surrounded by bunkers and runoff. The third is a scenic hole with a creek crossing the green and a bunker behind, so you'll need to choose the clubs that suit you. The 4th hole is a par 5 and easily accessible to long hitters, its only protection is the tiered green - you need to play here as the next few holes offer few options. Hole 6 is a long and challenging par 5 and trying to use both holes is risky as the water protects the right side of the green and its safer layup options. The 7th hole is a tricky par 3 with very fast and flat greens and if you hit the ball beyond that distance you face a frustrating chipping back into the water. On the 8th, all you have to do is decide how much doglegs you're willing to put up with - Overshoot and you'll end up in the water, but if you hit it right, you'll be rewarded with a short iron to the green.

The back nine at Muang Kaew Golf Club starts with a straight par 4, provided you avoid the creek that runs along the left side of the fairway. The 11th hole is a par 4 that requires an accurate tee shot followed by a tricky second shot on an elevated green surrounded by deep bunkers. The par 5 13th tee off with a blind tee shot over a daunting pond for nearly 150 yards. The 14th hole is a very exciting par 3 with a long upwind shot over the water and a bunker basin in front of the green. The 18th hole has a hidden pond waiting to swallow a slightly misguided approach.

Muang Kaew Golf Club isn't the most exciting course in the area, but it more than makes up for it with a great clubhouse, excellent maintenance and a very convenient location.
