Hua Hin golf courses

Palm Hills Golf Club

One of the first international standard courses in Hua Hin, Palm Hills Golf Club is still the most popular course, although a bit short, it has an excellent layout with fast greens that are hard to see. Nice clubhouse with great bar and restaurant.

Hua Hin is short of water and Palm Hills Golf Club seems to be the most affected, but in normal conditions the wide fairways are lush and flat, but well placed water hazards make things more challenging.

Some people say that the course has a links feel, but the tropical plants and trees around the course often don't match this statement. The back nine is more undulating and offers great views of the Gulf of Thailand.

Starts fairly soft with a sloping dogleg hole, par 4 with big bunkers blocking the tiger line, but if you play to the left of the fairway you have a nice line into the green with bunkers on both sides. Hole 2, the first hole of the par 5, is a formidable tee with water on both sides of the fairway and bunkers on both sides and behind the green. Hole 3 is a short par 3 and is fairly easy if you can avoid the large bunker that protects the right side of the green. The 4th hole is a short dogleg par 4 with a narrow landing between a large fairway bunker and trees to the left of the fairway. The 5th hole is a short and difficult par 4 with water on the left and a tricky approach with a bunker and a ditch protecting the left side of the green. The 8th hole is an interesting par 3 with a slight uphill water hazard before entering the 9th hole. The most difficult hole on the course, a tree blocks the left side of the fairway and the narrow green drops sharply from right to left.

Palm Hills Golf Club's back nine starts with some of the best holes on the course, including the 11th, a long, uphill par 3 where prevailing winds often make club selection difficult. The 12th hole is a challenging dogleg par 5 with water right of the tee and a very narrow landing on the second hole. The 14th hole is a challenging par 4 dogleg with water flowing through the fairway to the left and bunkers that can catch you if you want to play it safe. Perhaps an iron in tea would be desirable. There is a small break on the par 3 15th which is fairly easy and the 16th on the par 5th is a scoring opportunity if you can stay to the left of the fairway and avoid what could block your approach trees.

A truly beautiful resort course, still in great shape and well worth a visit on any golf holiday in Hua Hin, with green fees a bit cheaper than some of its famous neighbours.
