Bangkok golf courses

Panya Indra Golf Club

Panya Indra in Thailand's Bangkok district has a superb 27-hole layout that will keep you on your toes. The course is one of the few courses owned by the Pan Asia group, and it's not hard to see why it's one of the best in the Bangkok area.

Three separate 9-hole championship courses form two distinct 18-hole courses. The courses were designed by American Ronald Fream who has done a great job in creating a challenging yet fun golf course for golfers of all skill levels. Each loop is unique yet blends perfectly together to create a class of class.

True to its name, the Lagoon Course has the most water of the three loops, but the other two courses have no shortage of water hazards.

The Lagoon Loop presents a rigorous 3608 yard challenge with gently undulating fairways flanked by water, except for the 4th hole where the focus is on finding the fairways.

An excellent hole is the 6th hole. A par 4 hole 388 yards from the rear tee, the golfer is faced with a decision to go off the tee, shorten the hole and play an almost island-shaped fairway on the left to create a lakeside access or play safely to the right of the fairway, And water, leaving a more direct but longer approach to the green. Bravery is certainly rewarded here, but anything offline is severely punished.

The second nine, the Palm Course, sometimes referred to as the B Course, is another example of intricate design, with superb bunkers and water hazards majestically framing almost perfectly contoured fairways.

While not as watery as the Lagoon Course, when water is available, golfers can carefully consider how they approach each hole, and at 3,652 yards, the course is the longest of the three.

The Ninth is an excellent example of golf course design. A soft right-to-left dogleg on the 9th hole is shorter than the map shows, but if there are too many doglegs, you might be down for a drink. Play it too safe and you'll end up with long seconds on small, undulating greens.

The fourth hole is probably the signature hole of Panya Indra. Short par 3 hole that requires accuracy and club selection. From the tee you need to find the well-protected island green, a large bunker to the right provides a relief area, but this hole does not guarantee par.

The final 9 holes, Loop C or Garden Course are probably the most scenic areas on the course, with beautiful flowers as the backdrop to the holes.

Fream once again uses "clover" style bunkers and water features to beautifully increase the size and shape of the hole while providing variety.

Two straight holes introduce the Garden Course with ease, but the final four holes quickly make you realize that you have to fight for good results. The 6th hole is a long par 3 played over a lake corner with more play towards the back. The seventh hole is a short par 4 that requires pinpointing the well-protected fairway, longer shots may take the shorter route to the left.

The 8th hole is a short par 5 that many can play with two. A nice tee shot off the right edge of the fairway puts you short across the water. This hole might be easier for big hitters because they don't have to hit the second ball to the left of the lake. For those brave enough, this is an excellent birdie opportunity to get close to the water off the tee.

The final hole again requires a good tee shot to slice the lake, using the medium iron to push you onto the green. Anything close to the right will almost certainly find a puddle.

Panya Indra is in good condition all year round and for those who want to try their hand at night golf, it offers an opportunity to try it out. The greens are often small and hilly, making this a paradise for good putters but a nightmare for those less comfortable on the greens.

The facilities are of a high standard, as you would expect from a club close to town.
